James Bond – No Time To Die

James Bond (Daniel Craig) In NO TIME TO DIE - Metro Goldwyn Mayer

A review of the latest James Bond movie

“The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

The New James Bond Movie “No Time To Die” is in cinemas since April 2021.
I´ll take the last performance of Daniel Craig in the film directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga as a reason to wrap up the series as it is so far and answer some questions that have been on my mind as I left the theatre after the latest movie.

Spoiler Alert: I will reveal information about the ending and the plot of the last Bond Movie “No Time To Die”.

Does James Bond die in No Time To Die?

Short answer: Yes, he does.
Long answer: Can we be sure about it?

In the last scene in which Daniel Craigs Bond is seen alive on screen, he has just opened the hatches of an Island Bunker of his enemy Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek). The rockets will destroy Safins Nanobot factory which is key to his evil plan to bring the lives of billions of people on planet earth to an end. We see the rockets paint white stripes into the blue sky above the Kurilen Island on which the base is located. Then, from far, the explosions are visual, the impact feelable. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), James´ love-interested who we knew from the previous Bond movies breaking in tears, holding her daughter tight and safe. Bond got them into a boat, saving them before he sacrificed himself to destroy the evil Nanobot factory.
So we have to assume James is dead.
And since this is the last movie Mr. Craig is acting in it is a perfect spot to end his interpretation of the British 007 agent.

Does James Bond has a daughter?

During the film the daughter of Madeleine, Mathilde, gets introduced. She is five years old, exactly the time Bond has not seen Madeleine. Mathilde is recognizable, also to Bond, due to her bright blue eyes, same as him.
Madeleine denies his fathership to James in the earlier scene, probably because she doesn´t want to settle him up too much. It gets uncovered to him through Lyutsifer Safin, that Mathilde is, in fact, his daughter. That makes her the perfect hostage for Lyutsifer to get to Bond.

How Do the Craig Bonds connect?

Bond movies used to have connections in the old series as well. Ernst Stavro Blofeld is one of the villains that comes back to life in the Craig-Movies as a new-old threat.
Especially the movie “Spectre” is connected to “No Time To Die”. In the laster, all Spectre agents are killed by the Nanobot weapon called “Herakles” which was intended to kill Bond.

Is No Time To Die the last Bond Movie?

It is supposed to be the last time that we see Daniel Craig in the gentleman’s uniform. He did say this after Spectre as well but he seems to be more certain now.
Even if James Bond died (or at least we assume that he did) that doesn´t mean that the series has to end. We have seen Bond already die at the beginning of “From Russia with love” (1963) and that was not the only time James Bond died.
Of course, he never did through the hands of the crazy villain machines.
In my opinion as long as the fans want him back the studio will find a way.

Where was No Time To Die shot?

If you ever wanted to drive the same coasts as Bond but without being chased down or shot at, book a trip to Italy. In the opening scenes, the graveyard explosion and the car chases have been shot there in Gravina in Puglia and Matera.

What are the similarities in No time to Die and older Bond movies?

Bond fans could not avoid discovering some of the old toys, villains, and anecdotes from the older movies.
The Aston Martin V8 Vintage that Bond drives through the Italian medieval town of Gravina was first introduced in “The Living Daylights” in 1987.
The most interesting similarities in my opinion are the setting of No Time To Die and the very first Bond movie “Dr. No”. (1962) In this black and white-Bond, James has to visit Jamaika (see the similarities already) to find the killer of an MI6 Station Chief as well as solving the mystery around mislead US-missiles. After many attempts to end his life, Bond finds his way to an island called Crab Key, where the owner Dr. No is planning a clou on the US over some personal matters. He also wants Bond to join his criminal Organisation called Spectre.
So Bond dies where he left his first Arch enemy nearly 60 years ago. In a rocket bunker on an island.

We´ll see how he gets resurrected.

Will the next Bond be a woman?

James Bonds view of women has always been a bit questionable, as also Daniel Craig told in an interview he gave to GQ. Every Bond movie had strong female characters, especially the last have introduced more female agents than ever before. Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), Nomi 007 (Lashana Lynch) as well as Agent Paloma (Ana De Armas), so the thought of following up the franchise with a female 007 Bond would be an interesting idea. The chronology was never important so why not?

Sadly, the next Bond will be male again, as Barabara Broccoli said in an interview with Variety. According to her Bond is a man and it will stay like this.
The producer Duo is open to considering more strong female roles, but the J. in Bond will always be a James, never a Jane.

Final thoughts

I definitely liked the movie and am glad I could enjoy it in the theatre.

Even though the plot seems a bit structured at some points and nanobots are not as advanced now as it is shown in the movie, I am looking forward to rewatching it.
